Bon Odori 2009
Published on August 5th, 2009.
Okay... this post is really late but I'll put up some of the pictures that I took on that day and some of my thoughts on the event itself.
Bon Odori this year was held on the 18th July which was on a Saturday. The festival started at around 5 pm and lasted till about 10 pm.
Some information about Bon Odori. Obon or just Bone is a Japanese Buddhist custom to honor the departed (deceased) spirits of one's ancestors. Also called the Feast of Lanterns, it has been celebrated in Japan for more than 500 years and traditionally includes a dance, known as Bon-Odori. (From Wikipedia)
The festival was held over at the Panasonic Sports Comlex in Shah Alam. There is a field there which is for atheltic events I guess. You can see the stage which is in the centre of the field.
Its my first time attending Bon Odori so yeah... I found it to be quite crowded on that day. Did not expect such a huge turnout. When I arrived there, there were lots of busses outside the sports complex.
The performers lining up for a group shot before the dance started.
Those fences on the stage were kinda distracting not to mention that the stage was already quite high. The one in Penang didn't have those fences around the stage.
Drum guys. Lol.
Some stuff sold at the foodstalls section. This area was particularly dusty >.<. Since there was sand all over the place and the ground wasn't covered with grasss. Did not change my lens here. Therefore did not take many pics of the foodstalls ^^; The food was quite pricey though but I kinda expected that to happen.
Some more dances.
Owari desu~. This was after the last dance. They had 3 all together spread out at different times.
This is my first time going to Bon Odori but I felt that it wasn't as entertaining as it could have been. The one at Penang had some interesting stuff like fireworks display which unfortunately did not take place here ^^;
I will be looking forward to the one next year and hopefully can get myself a yukata to wear xP. That's all for my long deserved update for my blog.
As usual you can find more pictures from my Flickr over here.
