Samsung P2370H LCD Monitor

Samsung P2370H

Tech update time... ^^ . Got a new monitor to replace my previous one. Well, its not really that new anymore since its already been 2 months since I got it. The monitor that I picked up is the Samsung P2370H LCD monitor.

This is meant to be a replacement for my previous Samsung P2350 monitor which I posted about here. Biggest reason for the change in monitor was because I needed a HDMI input as I will explain later. Yes, this monitor is a 23" monitor too, the same as my previous one. Getting a bigger one would mean splurging more $$ and it wouldn't fit my desk very well anyway.

Box Contents

This is the standard packaging of the monitor. Notice the huge chunky brick there ^^" . That's the power adaptor for the monitor, unlike the P2350 which does not come with a power brick since that's built in to the monitor.

Well, the external power brick is the price to pay for having a slim profile and sleek monitor like the P2370H. In fact, all the other P2x70 series from Samsung comes with the external power adaptor if I'm not mistaken since they all share the same slim profile design.

Bezel

Bezel of the P2370H. Weird that the "H" here is missing... Hmmmm. As you can see, the red lining design around the bezel indicates that this is one of Samsung's "Touch of Color" monitors.

The red tint isn't really visible under normal lighting conditions. Its only visible with a bright source shining on to it which in this case came from my flash =)

Bezel

This is a Full High Definition (HD) monitor as its native resolution is 1920x1080. Contrast ratio seems to have gone higher here compared to the P2350. Then again, it only works for dynamic contrast and even so smells very gimmicky to me =p

Slim Profile

Very slim profile viewed from the side. Do not that due to the design, this monitor is not wall mountable (VESA) as compared to the P2350.

Logo on Bezel

Again, you can see the red tint which is a signature of the ToC lineup. The P2370H is not to be confused with the P2370 which was released earlier and there are a few differences between them.

Rear Connections

Here is the rear connections of the monitor. The most notable difference between the P2370H and P2370 is the presence of a HDMI in port and also and audio out port. The P2370 only has a DVI connection for input. HDMI was the main reason I made the switch of monitors.

Audio out allows you to carry the audio signal to your sound device if your HDMI input carries audio too.

Touch Buttons

Touch buttons on the P2370H. Takes some getting use to as it does not register at times when I press the "buttons". Another quirk with the monitor is that when you press the source button, it actually cycles between 3 inputs - HDMI, Digital (DVI) and Analog. Wait a minute... analog? What's it doing in this monitor which only has 2 inputs? Very strange indeed. And it gets annoying at times since the monitor has to cycle through an additional source which DOES NOT even exist!

P2370H and P2350

P2370H and P2350 side by side just for fun 8D

Site Surfing

Widescreen is awesome for browsing and just about anything else since there is more real estate on your screen.

Video Playback

Video playback. You won't get any black frames at the top and bottom if your video is in 16:9 format.

PS3 on Monitor

Testing the monitor with my PS3.

PS3

Colours looks great on the monitor. Just note that you can't hardware calibrate the monitor using a colourimeter with a PS3. Haha.

Backlight Bleed

On another note, this monitor is not without flaws though. When I first got it, I noticed some strong backlight bleeding at the bottom right edge corner of the screen. And it had a blue-ish tint to it too which is pretty annoying. 2 months after using it, the problem doesn't seem to be as bad as before. Or maybe I got used to the problem.

I'm thinking that the backlight bleed problem might be a consequence of the slim design but I heard from a fellow friend who has a P2370MS, this problem doesn't occur to his monitor. Then again, that's a different model though still sharing the same desgin. If, you do wish to get this monitor, just remember to test it out with a black/blank screen in the shop to avoid disappointment. Lol.

Dual Monitor Workspace

And here is the reconfigured layout of my workspace.

As for the backlight bleed issue, I'm too lazy to send my monitor back to Samsung for them to RMA or inspect it so yeah... I have been living with it. Other thatn the backlight bleed gripe, the P2370H is a fine monitor considering it has DVI and HDMI imputs. That's all for now =)

Just for curiosity's sake. What brand of monitor do you use? =D

Yo
Bruno from Brazil
I've just received my P2370H this morning =)
jumped from a 19" 933BW to this one
till now I'm loving it
the only complain would be the red color design... I wish it was blue...

man, about the analogic input:
the monitor brings a DVI-I to VGA RGB Analogic cable
So, YES, there are three differents outputs
HDMI, DVI-Digital, and DVI-I Analogic
=)

just for curiosity, what brand of HDMI cable are you using?

o/

Hey there Bruno,
About the red colour, the P2370 without the HDMI input is blue though. But the red isn't really visible unless you shine some bright lights on it xP.

Hmm, the anolog input, its still quite annoying to me. Wish there was an option to turn it off haha.

As for HDMI cable, I'm using a generic one. It doesn't really matter anyway since the signal is digital and quality won't be affected by the type/brand of cable ^_^ .

Hi, does this monitor has HDCP? Can you use the 1080p resolution from ps3? I was about to buy it but the seller said it has not, so i wouldn't be able to play my ps3.

BTW Really nice table u have ^^, looks like mine

raptor_cZn  on April 24th, 2010

Yes the monitor has HDCP support and you can use the 1080p resolution. I'm using it for my PS3 with a HDMI cable. =)

djshadow  on April 28th, 2010

Hello, goin for this monitor.
It comes with hdmi cable or without ? I think i see it in your box :D
Thanks ;)

raptor_cZn  on April 28th, 2010

No HDMI cable included unfortunately. But you can probably grab any cheap ones at computer stores.

djshadow  on April 28th, 2010

Does the cable make any big visible differences if I wanna watch bluray films ? I mean noname cables from any 100$ brand cables
:)

raptor_cZn  on April 28th, 2010

For HDMI it doesn't matter since the signal passed on is digital. So getting a generic $10 cable or branded $100 one won't make much difference =D

djshadow  on April 28th, 2010

Thank you then, gonna tell if i get same blue side on dark screen. ;)

Rodrigo  on May 16th, 2010

Hi =)

Rodrigo from Brasil

I've bought this monitor, but i have problems with HDMI port.

Using Xbox360, the screen shows a few "lacks" in image. Did you have the same problem? (I've test with lost planet)

raptor_cZn  on May 17th, 2010

Hey there Rodrigo, I have not tried out the monitor with an Xbox360 since I don't own one.

No problems with my PS3 though.

You could try checking the video output settings on you Xbox360 perhaps. Try using the highest resolution supported possible, as for my PS3 its 1080p.

Try using the HDMI input with another device if you have one. If it still has problems then your best bet is to send the monitor for RMA. =)

Waheedi  on June 26th, 2010

Hey raptor, i tried to connect my ps3 to my screen, it detects it but the colors are twisted resolution is incorrect, is there any special settings i should, while it works well in DVI port for my laptop but not with HDMI for ps3,

TIA

Crylo  on June 28th, 2010

@ Waheedi Set your PS3 to 1080P. Read the post above yours man lol

mat0265  on July 8th, 2010

Raptor, i have a question, i have this monitor with my ps3, i bought the hdmi cable, and i set the 1080p resolution. The menu and things like the playstation store, are in 1080p, but when i put a game like Red dead redemption, Resistance 2, or GTA IV, it goes to 1280x720p or sth similar, and the image looks awful . My games were much better in my crt tv, than in this full hd monitor.. Do you know what do i have to do?

raptor_cZn  on July 8th, 2010

@mat0265: Hey there mat. If I'm not mistaken, not all games run at 1080p resolution as they are developed to run at a lower res and then being upscaled to 1080p.

Even if the resolution goes down to 720p, I dont think it should affect the image quality that badly.
I have GTA4 and it looks alright on the monitor. Try checking the video settings in the game.

mat0265  on July 8th, 2010

yea idk, but all i can modify ingame, is the color, nothing else, but its weird, cause gran turismo 5 runs finely, is there anything that i have to do in the ps3 settings?

mat0265  on July 8th, 2010

I have enabled the full hd ,everything so, i dont know what i am doing wrong, the image in red dead redemption is seen pixelated, so i wonder, at least if i play in 720p, cant i see the image without being pixelated?

raptor_cZn  on July 8th, 2010

Under the display settings in the ps3 config.

Select custom set up and when you reach the screen with the checkboxes, try unchecking everything except 1080p and try the games again.

mat0265  on July 8th, 2010

yea i tried that, but the problem is that as i cant unckeck 480i, the games runs in 480i, so it looks even worse.

mat0265  on July 8th, 2010

the most funny of this, is that in my flat screen 21" phiplis of 480i the game played in much better graphics ...

mat0265  on July 8th, 2010

oo, i forgot, red dead redemption does not support 1080p, just 720p,but, cant i play without having the game pixelated?

raptor_cZn  on July 8th, 2010

Does the image look fuzzy on GTA4?

I've not tried red dead redemption so I can't really help you on that one but I'm guessing its tied to the game since you had no problems with GT5

mat0265  on July 9th, 2010

yes, it looks even worse xD, unbelivable, and much worse in resistance 2. But what it observed is that the image is like blurred, for example if i am looking towards a street, i see the buildings, the cars, the street very blurred. Have you configurated something in the monitor, so that it works fine?

raptor_cZn  on July 9th, 2010

As for GTA 4.. the game's abit blurry like that. Not tack sharp but yeah, I think its the way the game itself was designed.

In GTA 4 under the display settings try this "Turn Flicker filter off".

I'm not too sure about resistance 2 and red dead though.

mat0265  on July 9th, 2010

i ll try, but i just cant understand why the 720p games cant run without being pixalated. Its just weird

mat0265  on July 9th, 2010

I tired what you said, but it doesnt seem to work, . I also tried midnight club LA, and looks worse than in my phiplis 21" flat screen of 480i.... and it supports 1080p damn. could it be the hdmi cable? idk, maybe i should buy another one.

mat0265  on July 9th, 2010

tried* xDDD

raptor_cZn  on July 9th, 2010

You could try using another HDMI cable. Maybe borrow one from a friend if they have it to test and see if its the cable's fault.
